Building Generative Culture with Ron Westrum

It was an absolute honour to feature Ron Westrum in our current edition of video interview. He is a well-known American Sociologist. His contribution is unparalleled to understand what makes a high-performing organization across industries.

In this discussion, he has shared his experiences on building a generative culture, beginning with understanding what a generative culture is. Ron has highlighted the difference between NASA’s highly experimental culture and compliance driven culture of the US Space Shuttle program. According to him, it is important to build a culture with requisite imagination.

Interviewee: Ron Westrum (Professor, Sociology Emeritus at Eastern Michigan University)

Ron Westrum is Professor of Sociology Emeritus at Eastern Michigan University. He specializes in the sociology of science and technology, and in the dynamics of corporate culture. He has written three books, and some fifty technical papers. His last book is Sidewinder: Missile Design at China Lake, now in its fourth printing. He is well known for his “continuum of corporate culture” based on the flow of information, which has been adopted by many large technical organizations. He has worked on system safety in aviation and medicine, and given talks for many groups supported by NATO and the United Nations.
